What’s going on and a little thanks…

Hello!

We have been crazy busy planning and trying to get organised for the big events on 12/4/10. It’s officially the 3rd of December, we’re finalising schedules and assignments; sending our reminder emails on the little details to those who are booked to work the event.

I just wanted to take a moment to say that at present all positions are filled for the larger event at the creativeLIVE space. However there are other events happening that may still need help, check out the Help-Portrait Seattle Community to see what else still has needs.

Volunteers will be checking in with the Event Leaders on the 4th, approved volunteers will have access to the site. We hate to turn people away, but with space constraints, we’re just not going to be able to handle any additional people on site.

Thank you again! And look forward to the possibilities…

a Big announcement

We have big ideas!

In 2009, a few of us orchestrated several events within the Seattle area. Through these events we were able to provide over 300 individuals and families with portraits. When we got together this year, we thought about how we could kick it up a notch, you know, to the next level. We knew of Non-Profit organizations that we wanted to work with, organizations we connected with. We wanted to give more portraits, hopefully impact more lives. We started having conversations, which lead to ideas, some big, some small. We’ve been working on those smaller ideas, planning on site events in a few locations, but the big idea was still out there, lurking about.

The big idea:
What we if could find a larger space, invite people to join us there, for a day long event. We have found ourselves in a fortunate situation, access to a larger space, in a central location, the creativeLIVE studio.

On the heels of the Experimental Portraiture Workshop with Jeremy Cowart, we will be hosting an event at the creativeLIVE space on 12/4/10.

We are reaching out to several organizations, inviting them to join us, throughout the day. We will have several photo booth’s setup, a plethora of editors, greeters, and more to make this event a success.

We are still seeking volunteers, so if you’re interested and haven’t gotten in touch with us yet, please check out our Volunteer Survey.

We are going to have a planning meeting with all the volunteers who can join us at Uptown Espresso at 4th Ave and Wall St in Belltown, on Monday, November 22nd at 7:00 PM.

If you are unable to make the meeting, but still want to be involved the day, you must send us an email so that we can chat about the day of. We will probably do a second meeting the week of the event to finalize details.

A couple of notes:
You do not have to be a Photographer to be involved, as a matter of fact we will need more Non-Photographers than Photographers. We will need Photographers, Editors, Assistants, Greeters, Administrative Types, and more…

If you are a Photographer and want to be involved, please include a link to your online portfolio, if you currently only have a Flickr account or something similar, please share a set of your best portraits.

That’s it for now… oh yea… I know I’m forgetting something…

You might see a familiar face or two if you check this out: creativeLIVE Planning a Successful Help-Portrait Event.

Wait hmmm… I swear, I think there’s something else. What could it be?

Oh yea… I know, Jeremy Cowart is going to be there with us on the 4th too, as part of the Help-Portrait Seattle crew!

Calling All Volunteers!

Today’s post is all about Volunteers. We have only had a couple of meetings so far to kick off what Help-Portrait Seattle looks like for us, for 2010. We have some ideas, small and intimate, gigantic and crazy, variety is the spice of life, right? So we are working on locations and organisations we can reach out to this year, starting with a couple of organisations that we worked with last year, we already have to events on the books for 2010.

Our first event will be on 11/13/10, with the Tzu-Chi Foundation. Last year this was big, busy and a lot of fun, this year we anticipate the event to be bigger and bolder! So we need you, to lend a hand, get involved, take some photos, edit some photos, and make someone’s day! (Ok, perhaps a LOT of people’s days, weeks, who knows the impact!)

Along with that event, we wanted to start reaching out to volunteers as a whole. Ideally we plan on anywhere from 3-5 events in the Seattle and surrounding areas on 12/4/10, and it will take a lot of people to make that dream come to fruition.

So if you’re ready to Get Involved fill out our Help-Portrait Seattle Volunteer Survey!

12.12.09

Here’s how it all began…

A year or so ago, a man Jeremy Cowart , had an idea. A simple idea, which inspired a movement of International proportions.

1. Find someone in need.

2. Take their portrait.

3. Print their portrait.

4. Deliver them.

Before he knew it, it exploded into something rather amazing, Help-Portrait. A day was chosen in December, to make it happen: 12.12.09.

Photographers would give their time, their skills, and use of equipment to create images for those in need, with no thoughts of “what is in it for me”, just to lend a hand.

I heard about it, and began the search to see what I could do locally, even if it meant being a greeter, or a photographer or helping out however I could. I met up with a few other photographers and began planning what we could do. In a short amount of time we had three events scheduled for three separate Saturday’s in December, then it was 5. As we got closer to 12.12.09, there was more and more interest, and more events popping up.

We worked with local businesses like Costco and Glazer’s Camera, as well reached out to friends and family, as well working a bit of the social media angle to pull together the money, equipment and people we would need to make this happen. Reaching out to Transitional Housing, Churches and Community Centers, we provided approximately 200 families in need with quality portraits, at no cost to them.

A big thanks to those involved!!!!

Some behind the scenes and crew images can be seen on Flickr, Help-Portrait Seattle.

Stay tuned for information about what we’re planning to do next.
